February is set up to be a great month at the Children’s Museum, celebrating those we love with Valentine’s-themed Angel Bear Yoga workshops and Mary Time Music workshops, but also to celebrate the many contributions that African Americans have made throughout history with themes of music, literature and arts that tie back to the Museum’s mission. Two performances stand out – the first by Mama Olivia’s African Cultural Arts Ensemble on Sunday, February 12 and second, The Healing Force on Saturday, February 18. Both of these groups bring music, dance and storytelling to life for visitors. They will both be great shows that you will not want to miss.

Can you believe that it is already time to think about Summer Camp? I don’t know about you, but I start getting that antsy feeling to look around and see what the opportunities are for my kids about this time of year because I want to make sure they get to do the things they want to do with a schedule that works for me too! Summer Camp registration is online beginning February 1 with early bird discounts during the month. A few favorites are back again including Big Bang Boom Rock Star Camp (who can resist being a rock star, even a few years in a row), building camps and arts-based camps as well as a half-day three-year old camp, but they’ll include lots of new activities. As you check out Summer Camp’s themes this year, you’ll notice the Children’s Museum’s new website. We have tried to make it easier to navigate and easier to find the information that you are looking for – let us know what you think!

Our story: Where has my patience gone? I can’t blame it on a cold winter stuck indoors because there have been plenty of days for outdoor play. I guess I could blame it on a phase they’re going through, but I think the phase has been ongoing for a few years now. So, I am back to one finger pointing at them and three other fingers pointing back at me! We’re always trying to teach our kids patience – patience to wait just a minute or patience with each other or patience to have a turn in line. I am usually a patient person, really. In fact, my husband says I have the most patience in the family, but lately it has been well tested. Anytime, I seem to get a moment to relax, there is a fuss or a momma…momma…mmmooommmaaa coming from somewhere and there are usually tears involved – either I’m hurt, I’m mad or I am just crying for no apparent reason. Just this weekend, I ran an errand and was gone for two hours and later during dinner, I believe we heard momma about 30 times (literally). Scott and I just looked at each other and had to chuckle – every sentence started with momma, you know what? And inside, I go to my mantra of late (okay, so it’s not the best and I am showing my age here as I sway with my eyes closed) “…Little patience, mmm yeah,…Need a little patience, yeah…Just a little patience…Some more patience…Could use some patience, yeah…” “Momma, I’m finished, can you turn on Team Umizoomi and the Shape Bandit (for the 6th time today)? Give me just a minute to clean up – No, now please (with whining)” (“Gotta have some patience, yeah”) …”I don’t want to eat that for dinner – I hate it and you know it and you make me eat it anyway”(“All it takes is patience”)…”Momma, he is being so selfish, he took my (fill in the blank)”(“Just a little patience”)…”Momma, you want me to do my writing, but I can’t spell the and I can’t put a period there” (“mmm, Just a little patience”). What programs are coming up at the museum – music, dance and storytelling programs with paid admission in February or free with membership – see you there! And Summer Camp registration starts February 1st you say, hmmm…just a little patience.

Check back in March for more information on the 2012 Storybook Soiree.
